“On February 13, 1975, a three-alarm fire broke out on the 11th floor of the North Tower. Fire spread through the core to the 9th and 14th floors by igniting the insulation of telephone cables in a utility shaft that ran vertically between floors. Areas at the furthest extent of the fire were extinguished almost immediately and the original fire was put out in a few hours. Most of the damage was concentrated on the 11th floor, fueled by cabinets filled with paper, alcohol-based fluid for office machines, and other office equipment. Fireproofing protected the steel and there was no structural damage to the tower. Other than the damage caused by the fire, a few floors below suffered water damage from the extinguishing of the fires above. At that time, the World Trade Center had no fire sprinkler systems.”

On Wednesday, May 4 and continuing in to May 5, 1988, the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to and extinguished the most challenging and difficult high-rise fire in the city’s history. The fire destroyed four floors and damaged a fifth floor of the modern 62 story First Interstate Bank building in downtwon L.A.

The building has a structural steel frame, protected by a sprayed-on protective coating, with steel floor pans and lightweight concrete The exterior curtain walls are glass and aluminum.

The fire extended at a rate estimated at 45 minutes per floor and burned intensely for approximately 90 minutes on each level.

Look at Chris Mohr’s example at the 2:00 minute mark and a few of his comments. He says:
“had a fast, all at once, almost symmetrical collapse, pretty much into it’s own footprint.”
“Watch the blackened rectangle where the fire is the worst … It collapses as a separate unit from the staircase to it’s right which resisted the fire”

First of all, the building did not Totally collapse, it PARTIALLY collapsed. It also did not fall at free fall into its own footprint. This 13 story building took 7 seconds to partially collapse. The 47 story building 7 was gone in the same amount of time.
