This is not technically true because a plane is not flying a straight line so to speak. It’s constantly maintaining adjustments to make sure it stays at cruising altitude. Gravity also plays a part as the plane is traveling in the same atmosphere. A constant altitude must be kept which means a fixed distance to the earth’s center of gravity.

Temperature does not equate with the distance the Earth is to the sun. It has to do with the tilt of the axis. As for lack of flights in the Southern Hemisphere, you have to figure in that there is very little land in the Southern Hemisphere compared to the North with a lot less people. Not to mention that the Countries (excluding Australia) in the South are some of the poorest countries in the World to live in. To put it into better perspective the USA has over 15,000 airports, whereas Argentina has only 1,100 and South Africa has less than 600. This is why there is less traffic in the South.

But the main reason why we don’t see flights over the Ocean in the Southern Hemisphere is because there are no radar sites and thus no way to track flights. It would require the aircraft to transmit their location via radio to a ground station, not through radar.

Let’s take the Big Dipper as an example. For the different times of year, depending on position, the Big Dipper is always visible in the Northern Hemisphere and not always visible in the Southern Hemisphere unless you are north of the 25 degree North Latitude. In contrast, people that live in the South see the “South Cross” and it cannot be seen by anyone North of the 25 degree South Latitude. If the Earth was flat, then everyone would be able to see the Big Dipper and the South Cross at the same time. The fact that we can’t proves the Earth is a sphere.
